by Chamikara Weerasinghe Inspector General of Police Indra de Silva yesterday requested the Interpol to investigate the series of events reported to have taken place in connection with the death of Ven. Gangodawila Soma Thera in Russia. IGP Silva said he had taken this step acting on a letter received from Lanka Sama Samaja Party Leader Batty Weerakoon yesterday. Weerakoon had said in his letter that since many "rumours" seemed to have spread about the prelate's death, it would be worthwhile to investigate the incident and disclose the truth to the public. Some people claim that Ven. Soma Thera never received any hospital treatment in Russia and some claim that awarding of a doctorate did not take place, the letter said. The IGP said investigations are in place to identify the suspects who distributed provocative "leaflets" at the Thera's funeral. Asked about the tear gas incident at the funeral, the IGP said it appears that people have over-reacted to the distribution of leaflets. |
