by Sandasen Marasinghe The chairman of Wijaya Newspapers and Lake House Printers and Publishers, Ranjith Wijewardene stressed the need for professionally qualified journalists and media personnel in the country at the awards ceremony of the Sri Lanka Foundation Diploma in Journalism and Communication on Monday. The awards ceremony and the inauguration of the seventh diploma course was held at the Sri Lanka Foundation Institute Auditorium. He observed that the profession of the media personnel has become more challenging and they should be innovative in their presentations. He further stated that journalists can serve society by helping to bring justice forthwith and the reputation of a person could be damaged by a single sentence. "The lost reputation cannot be regained even with hundreds of corrections", he pointed out. He said that trainees were expected to gain knowledge studying the code of ethics for journalists along with the other essential aspects. Chairperson of the Governing Board of the SLF Diploma in Journalism and Communication project Dr Tara de Mel stated that the course was designed to impart theoretical as well as practical knowledge in the English Medium, to those who wished to take up the challenging profession. Director of the SLFI Prof. J. W. Wickramasinghe and Course Coordinator, Ms. Myrle Williams also addressed the gathering. |
