Lanka-China Business Council strengthens trade ties

A nine-member trade delegation led by Wen Guangyuan, Vice Mayor, the People's Government of Yibin, Sichuan, China and Dai Shao Quan, Vice Chairman of CCPIT - Sichuan Council, China, visited the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce (CCC) recently, on an invitation by the Chamber. The mission was organised by the Sri Lanka-China Business Council (SLCHBC) to expand trade and economic co-operation between the two countries to explore business opportunities.

Ranjan de Silva, Vice President of the SLCHBC said that China has been identified as a lucrative market worldwide. He said that barriers such as geographical expanse and language have kept this market closed to most parts of the world. Lack of knowledge and information in identifying potential areas, also prevented new business ventures with China. He called upon the CCPIT - Sichuan Council to identify potential lines in their region for the benefit of the Sri Lankan business community.

Dai Shao Quan, Vice Chairman of the CCPIT, Sichuan council said that Sri Lanka and China share similar economic conditions as both countries are gradually transforming from an agriculture-based economy to an industry-based economy.

He said that with the opening of the economy, they have witnessed a rapid growth in the industrial sector, especially in the area of Information Technology, Hydropower, Medicine, Food and Beverage and Tourism. He said that the CCPIT - Sichuan Council has over 3,000 industrialists, affiliated to the Council. They were aware of the lucrative business opportunities in Sri Lanka and were looking forward to explore those prospects, he said.

The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the two institutions, focused on promoting, strengthening and expanding trade, investment, economic, scientific, technological co-operation and to assist members in information needs, establishing and strengthening business contacts. The MoU was signed by Tilak de Zoysa, Chairman, CCC and Dai Shao Quan, Vice Chairman, CCPIT, Sichuan Council.
