N'Eliya base hospital in appalling condition by P. Rajaratnam in Nuwara Eliya The Nuwara Eliya Base Hospital was criticised at the Nuwara Eliya Municipal Council's year end meeting. H. M. Abeysinghe (PA) said the base hospital was in an appalling condition. He said those seeking treatment here return with additional diseases rather than cures. "Overcrowding is also a cause for concern. Three to four patients put on each bed, while a number of patients sleep on the floor, he said. He alleged that all governments have not paid any attention to remedy the situation. Abeysinghe said several ministers promised to develop the hospital, but no progress had taken place. He appealed to Government to take positive steps to improve the hospital. The Council unanimously decided to accord a reception to K. Prabakaran, 23, from the Nuwara Eliya Golf Club, who won for the first time in its 112-year-old existence of the Sri Lanka National Amateur Golf championship. D. Mathavan, moving a resolution said this youth had come up the hard way and beaten India, Pakistan and Bangladesh. The entire council members supported it and was decided a reception should be organised in Nuwara Eliya. The five Tamil members in the council requested the Mayor Chandana Karunaratne that in future development perspectives of the city, adequate sums of money be allocated for the development of five estates within the council limits. The Mayor outlined the council's achievements within the past one and a half years. He said Nuwara Eliya city has been acclaimed by the country for its recent developments. The Mayor thanked the members and the council staff for their support. He said the April festivities in Nuwara Eliya should be organised in a fitting manner. |
