Ensure safety of all - Hindu Congress

The All Ceylon Hindu Congress in a press release issued yesterday called upon the President and the Prime Minister to ensure freedom and safety of people of all religions while ensuring at the same time that unethical religious conversion does not take place.

The press release:

"All Ceylon Hindu Congress (Federation of Hindu Religious Associations and Trusts) is perturbed to hear of attacks on certain places of religious worship.

"In the past Hindu religious places of worship were attacked in unfortunate situations. Although the present attacks are on the places of religious worship of another religion, we, the Hindus, respecting the other religious places of worship condemn those attacks. No one should be allowed to spread religious hatred in that unfortunate fashion.

"We appreciate the prompt attention taken by the President and the Prime Minister to curb such acts of religious tension.

"At the same time we have been supporting the suggestion of the Minister of Hindu Religious Affairs to pass legislation to prohibit all types of unethical religious conversions. While the religious freedom should be preserved no one can tolerate innocent and poor people being cheated and converted to another religion in unethical or improper ways.

"We urge the President and the Prime Minister to take action to ensure freedom and safety for people of all religions and at the same time to ensure that unethical religious conversion does not take place and also that necessary legislation is enacted to prohibit such unethical religions conversion.

"Let us live with love and understanding. All religions are based on love. Religious tolerance and mutual respect for each other irrespective of race and religion must be maintained and supported by all the religious groups and leaders."
