Let us dedicate ourselves to building ethnic and religious harmony - Karu

Deputy UNP Leader, Power & Energy Minister Karu Jayasuriya said they were greatly shocked to hear about the attacks made on some religious institutions during the past few days in various parts of the island.

"We strongly believe that every person has the right to follow any religion he likes. A religion cannot be loaded on another forcibly. It lies on the faith and respect the Minister Jayasuriya stated in a media release.

They are unaware that by whom these action of cruelty were committed. However, when examined carefully, it is clear that these acts are the results of a destructive forces aimed at creating trouble in the country, the release states.

Every religious leader has been patient of other religions. The Buddha was in the forefront who endured other religions. The Buddha gave the first priority to the freedom of man than anything else. Therefore, the real Buddhist is undoubtedly a person who endures other religions. He doesn't insult other religions. He will not harm other religious institutions, it states.

"We have reached a critical juncture of our history owing to our divided nature. A nation that lived bound by the brotherhood in the same country for several centuries is now divided racially and politically. Although the echoes of the war broke up due to those reasons are not audible to us today, stability of the peace and unity is not created among us so far."

"We are undergoing many economical and social problems as a result of the division among nation," the release adds.

No doubt that religious harassment is based on many destructive and narrow objectives aimed at misleading the innocent people. Today's generation will not escape from the curse of the future generation if the people were pushed towards a series of acts leading to a division according to religion, deceived by these destructive forces.

Hence, we request the public to dedicate themselves to the nobel attempt of building a country with ethnic and religious harmony by not surrendering to those extremists who are involved in spreading the seeds of a religious division.
