Foreign Minister Tyronne Fernando who was on an official visit to Mauritius met with his counterpart Anil Kumarasingh Gayan on Friday December 26, 2003 at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Cooperation. The two ministers at this meeting exchanged their views on regional and international issues such as: the future of the Indian Ocean Rim Association for Regional Cooperation (IOR-ARC), the UN, the Commonwealth and the SAARC. At this meeting Minister Fernando explained the importance of a direct air link between Port Louis, Capital of Mauritius and Colombo in order to promote tourism between the two countries. At the joint press briefing by the two ministers, Minister Anil Kumarasingh Gayan announced Minister Fernando's candidature to the post of Secretary General of the United Nations which will be falling vacant in the year 2007. Minister Fernando also called on Hon. Paul Raymond Berenger, Prime Minister. There he made a, request for the Government of Mauritius to consider on humanitarian grounds, the release of a Sri Lankan Captain of the fishing vessel "Madushani" which had been under apprehension since January 2002. The Prime Minister assured that this request would be given urgent attention by Commission of the Prerogative of Mercy. The Prime Minister also acceded to Minister Fernando's request to have a plaque describing historical relations with Sri Lanka, at the Tomb of Ehalepola, First Adigar of the last King of Kandy, as there is at present, no reference to Sri Lanka at the Tomb. Minister Fernando also paid a courtesy call on H.E. Sir Anerood Jugnauth, President and Hon. Pravind Kumar Jugnauth, Deputy Prime Minister of Mauritius on the same day. Minister Fernando also visited the Headquarters of IORARC, the Indian Ocean Rim Association for Regional Cooperation, of which he is the current Chairman and had discussion with Executive Secretary Desoruth. |
