Sathosa - a new era in consumerism - Ravi Karunanayake

Opening a new page in the history of Sri Lanka's oldest chain of retail outlets - the much debated Sathosa, Commerce Minister Ravi Karunanayake promised a new era in consumerism where excellence in service will be the bench mark in the new year.

With the Management of all retail outlets being handed over to an alliance from the private sector, the Minister was confident that with the private sector vision in marketing strategies, the once ailing giant will be booming with sales before long.

The Minister however cautioned the new stakeholders to focus primarily on the service to the general masses where price, quality and availability must be maintained at any cost.

"Naturally with growing customer satisfaction and base, the profits will soar" he said.

In the latter part of December the 40% stake of Sathosa Retail Limited with full Management control of all the 152 retail outlets scattered throughout the country was brought under the control of Richard Peries, Ceylon Biscuits and Carsons Cumberbatch Alliance. With very limited time for the onset of year end season, nearly 75% of the depleted stocks were replenished.

In his New Year message to the employees of Sathosa Retail and Wholesale, the Minister said that the Government under the leadership of Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe and himself as the Minister in charge of this establishment will never betray the trust placed with them in recognising their social welfare and job security.

In relation to consumers he said the Ministry had taken a combined effort to safeguard the interest of the customers as well as the trader through the establishment of land mark legislation, the Consumer Affairs Authority.
