by Rashomi Silva The islandwide electrification level will be raised to 72 per cent with the completion of 'Deepaloka electrification program', before the year end, the Ministry of Power and Energy said. A concept of Power and Energy Minister Karu Jayasuriya, Deepaloka projects are mainly funded by China and the Asian Development Bank (ADB). It consists of 1,450 islandwide projects due to be completed mid next year. Work has commenced on over 700 projects while over 100 projects have already been completed. The project will benefit one million rural consumers. Thirty eight rural electrification schemes have been completed in Jaffna district and 10 in Batticaloa district. The conflict affected area rehabilitation project funded by the ADB is expected to allocate funds for further electricity schemes in the district. Twenty more schemes for Mullaitivu and Kilinochchi districts are also on the cards, Jayasuriya said. The Chinese government will bear the cost of over 500 projects. Further discussions with the Chinese and Swedish governments are under way for more financial assistance, the Minister said. |
