Cyclone hits southern India, two dead HYDERABAD, India, Wednesday (Reuters) Two people were killed and thousands were evacuated from India's southeast coast on Tuesday as a cyclone smashed ashore, uprooting trees and snapping power and telephones lines. The storm hit the southern state of Andhra Pradesh a little after midnight on Monday, accompanied by heavy rain and wind reaching speeds of 120 kph (75 mph), officials said. The storm had weakened by Tuesday evening, they said. Relief Commissioner Ashutosh Mishra said about 13,000 people had been moved out of the coastal districts of Guntur and Krishna which bore the brunt of the storm. One person was killed when a wall collapsed while another was killed when a haystack fell on him, Mishra said. |
