Gearing up for 2004 Indoor Cricket World Cup

The Ceylon Indoor Cricket Association is gearing up for its major event - the Indoor Cricket World Cup 2004 which will be held in Austasia Sports Club, Thalawathugoda in October next year.

CICA has launched the 2004 World Cup campaign by launching the World Cup logo and the mascot. This event is getting momentum day by day and has got some of the leading brands tying up as partners for this event. Caltex Lubricants has come forward as the National Indoor Cricket Team sponsor and Lion Brewery as the official local beverage to name a few.

These top brands have supported this game from the inception and it has helped CICA to produce the number 3 side in the world within a period of two and a half years. According to Director Sports of CICA, Romesh Kaluwitharana "There is a great opportunity of getting the World Cup title as this is the first time that this version of cricket has been played in our conditions in Asia".

At the recent World Indoor Cricket Federation (WICF) AGM held in Brisbane Australia, a priority in the agenda was the World Cup 2004 and by having the prestigious title of Chairman Marketing Committee being granted to Cedric Anthony.

With this CICA has a deciding contribution in granting international TV rights and more international brands negotiating with WICF to tie up as official partners such as official carrier, official hotel and at present the international committee has appointed some tour operators in playing countries to handle this event. This will benefit the hosting country Sri Lanka, as one of the main source of income to the country is via tourism.

CICA expects a huge spectator following for the World Cup and is gearing up for a festival of sports commencing early next year with Australia, New Zealand and the Under-19 team of South Africa planning to arrive in Sri Lanka and in turn Sri Lanka will tour England and the UAE on invitation received by these countries.

From the technical aspect - CICA is blessed with Hiran de Mel's appointment to the WICF Technical Committee. The technical committee of CICA, headed by Hiran is planning to select approximately 40 players form the ongoing Mercantile Tournament which will end next month, for the national and development squads for the preparation of the busy calendar.

CICA will monitor these two squads in regard to physical fitness, game perfection and mentally preparing the players to the international level of indoor cricket performance with required facilities and exposure.
