CMC opposition members protest

by Ariyaratne Ganegoda and Wyman Hettiarachchi

The Opposition Members of the Colombo Municipal Council led by CMC Opposition Leader Milton Liyanage and JVP Members of the Western Provincial Council launched a demonstration opposite the Colombo Town Hall yesterday (17) protesting against the assault on JVP MMC Sunil Watagala. They were shouting slogans condemning thuggery and intimidation and demanded the Mayor to go home if he is unable to contain such activities.

Addressing the media personnel at the close of the demonstration, the Western Provincial Council Member Lakshman Nipunaarachchi said that the assault took place when MMC Sunil Watagala, Attorney at Law, raised a point of order and pointed out that CMC budget that was presented in the House did not have the signatures of the Mayor, the Municipal Commissioner and the Municipal Accountant, which are essential.

Nipunaarachchi further said that a similar omission took place when the Kaduwela Pradeshiya Sabha budget was placed before that house, but the Pradeshiya Sabha postponed the meeting to rectify the error. He further condemned the act of assaulting a member in the well of the House and added that in this instance the victim member's participation in proceedings was suspended and that the incident has been referred to the police for investigation.
