Politicos oust bureaucrats from Secretariat by Sanjaya Maturata and Kandy North Group Correspondent The Kandy District Secretariat (Kachcheri) building is slowly turning to an office complex of political big wigs in the area causing problems to the efficient functioning of several vital government departments and institutions housed there. Several leading politicians are having their offices in the building while many others have requested office space for them. As a result, the space available for government departments for their efficient functioning is getting restricted causing hardship to the public visiting them to get their official matters attended to, many public servants lamented. Plantation Industries Minister Lakshman Kiriella, Minister for Registration of Land Ownership Lucky Jayawardena as well as the Chief Minister and opposition leader of the Central Provincial Council and the Nuwara Eliya District MP K. K. Piyadasa have their offices in the secretariat building. Apart from this, Kandy District MP A. H. M. Haleem has been allocated office space in the computer section of the district secretariat. Kandy district MP Chitra Mantilleke too has asked for office space and has been allocated the Civil Engineer's office. But Mantilleke had turned down the offer saying she would prefer the former store room used by the Kachcheri as she wanted a more comfortable office with air-conditioning. |
