Teletronics introduces modern line lightning protector

by Shirajiv Sirimane

Though Sri Lanka is not high in the world lightning and thunder map the risk of death, injury and property damage has been recorded frequently in Sri Lanka. The Gampaha district, Katunayake, Avissavella, Ratnapura and Hatton have been identified as high-risk areas in Sri Lanka vulnerable to lightning strikes. The world lightning map has rated Sri Lanka fewer than 100 while Hawaii (360) and Indonesia (200) are among the high-risk belt.

Managing Director Teletronics Group Trevor Alphonso said there is no 100% safe method of escaping a lightning strike but there is new technology which has been introduced to safeguard electrical appliances in homes and office industries.

He said that one of the first items vulnerable for lightning strikes are telephone, fax and computer modems. "If the lightning strike is very severe the whole computer or the telephone system burns off which would result in unwanted expenditure."

The Company has introduced the 3M telephone fax and modem line protector to safeguard these products. It is a simple product which can be fitted on your own." He said that there is a light to do indicate that the unit is working and if the light has gone off it means that lightning has struck. "One has to change a fuse and no technician is needed do it."

Lightning is one of the most unpredictable forces of nature. It can strike from minor or major storms and can hit a target 10 or even 25 miles away from the parent cloud. There's no way to see it coming, because it happens so fast, and scientists are still trying to understand how it works.

He said that the most sensible way to safeguard electrical and telephone related products are to ground it. He said that LPI electrical power surge protector is one of the other products, which has been effectively used in Sri Lanka.

"We offer poducts for home appliances, offices and for industrialists to guard against lightning. The products are manufactured in USA and Australia and have a five year warranty," he said.
