28 feared dead in boat accident

PATNA, India, Tuesday (AFP)

Twenty-eight people were feared dead Monday when their boat rammed into a tree and sank in a river in the eastern Indian state of Bihar, an official said.

The boat packed with labourers sank in the Singhi Ghat area of the West Champaran district bordering Nepal, 225 kilometers north of Bihar's capital Patna, local administrator Jumman Ali Ansari said.

"One dead body of a woman has been recovered and 12 people of the 40 passengers in the boat so far have swum to safety," Ansari said.

He said a rescue team was looking for any more survivors and divers were searching the Gandak river for bodies. Such accidents are common in impoverished Bihar due to overcrowding and poor upkeep of locally made boats.

Last week 15 people drowned elsewhere in Bihar when a steamer collided with a smaller boat.

Hundreds of villagers die in boat accidents annually in the state, especially during floods in the rainy season between June to September.
