Lankan junior cyclist do well in Malaysia The interim committee for cycling in Sri Lanka, in a bid to foster the Junior cyclists in the country fielded five top riders to the Perlis Cycling Championships currently held in Malaysia from 28 November to 2nd December 2003. This is an International event of repute and over six countries participated and the riders represented these countries namely, Malaysia, Hong Kong, Uzbekistan, Indonesia, Australia and Sri Lanka. Sunjeeva Muttaiya and CI Sisila Kumara of the SL Police accompanied the riders as Manager and Assistant Manager, Anthony Symonds went as the coach. However, the junior team was coached by Upali Ratnayake before they left on the tour for a short stint. G. K. Damith Nalinda, B. G. K. Karunarathne, F. S. Rangana Sumedha, R. G. N. Amila Kumara and Chatura Dushanta represented Sri Lanka. We intend to participate in the Time Trial, Criterium Race and the Road Race. In the Criterium Race held they have reached a top speed of 46.65 Kmph, which is very close to Asian record speed of 47 Kmph. The first bunch consisting five riders representing Hong Kong, Uzbekistan, Sri Lanka, Malaysia lead the rest by 1 minute and 20 seconds. Sri Lankan rider from Gampaha Damith Nalinda came fourth with a time of 51.26.67 and Sri Lankan B. G. K. Karunarathne finished 7th while Rangana Sumedha finished 9th. Chatura Dushantha finished 12th and followed by Nalinda Amila Kumara in the 15th place. The final Road event is scheduled for today and our riders are determined to clinch a place with in the first three to keep the Sri Lankan flag flying. The Anuradhapura DCA also fielded a female team consisting of 6 riders. |
