Sri Lanka field a talented young outfit at Dubai Rugby Sevens

Ranjeeva Seneviratne reporting from Dubai

Dubai, United Arab Emirates, Tuesday - Sri Lanka, under the leadership of Kandy SC's Winger Radhika Hettiarachchi will field a talented young outfit at the Dubai Rugby Sevens which will be worked off at the Dubai Exiles Rugby Ground, Dubai from December 3 to 5, 2003.

Under his captaincy Sri Lanka clinched the plate championship at the Singer Sevens in Kandy in September and they will go all out to give a repeat performance in Dubai.

Sri Lanka have been drawn into Group 'A' at the Dubai Sevens along with world sevens champions England, European Champions France and Morocco.

"Sri Lanka is confident of overcoming Morocco and giving a tough fight to England and France" said Sri Lanka Sevens Coach Chandrishan Perera.

Youngsters like Amjad Buksh, Pradeep Liyanage and Prasad Chathuranga are immensely talented and we have only to motivate them to give of their best" said Chandrishan.

The Sri Lanka Sevens Coach said that Sri Lanka's aim is to play in the plate championship by coming up with a fine display in the group matches as all these years Sri Lanka has been relegated to the bowl championship on the final day of the Dubai Sevens.

The Lankan Sevens Squad has been training hard for the last one month under the watchful eyes of the two coaches Chandrishan Perera and Hisham Abdeen. In addition they have undergone an intensive strength training program under former Sri Lanka Athlete Tavou Alailima which should stand them in good stead.

Last year Sri Lanka lost to Namibia by 12-35 in the bowl semi-final. They went down fighting to the formidable France by 12-19 in a pool 'A' game while losing to champions New Zealand (0-66) and Samoa (5-57) in the other two matches in pool 'A'.

The Sri Lanka Sevens Squad: Radhika Hettiarachchi (Captain), Sajith Mallikarachchi, Nilufer Ibrahim, M. J. Mushtaq, Sumedha Jayasinghe, Dilan Abeygunawardena, Lalindra Rodrigo, Lakala Perera, Pradeep Liyanage, Amjad Buksh, Dilip Selvam, Prasad Chathuranga, Chandrishan Perera (Coach), Hisham Abdeen (Assistant Coach), D.I.G. Nimal Lewke (Manager).
