Hiran Auckland's Cricket Umpire of the year by Richard Dwight Doing extremely well as a cricket umpire at the moment in Auckland, New Zealand, in Sri Lanka's Hiran Perera who since emigrating to New Zealand in 1998, has contributed much towards umpiring in Auckland to make the right kind of impression, to earn for himself Auckland's Best Umpire of the year 2002/03 award, indeed a fine achievement in recognition and appreciation of services rendered in the cause of umpiring way out in there. Hiran spent his formative years at Holy Cross College, Kalutara, where he excelled at cricket ending up as its coach 1985-87, whilst also playing cricket for the Crusaders Sports Club and Moors SC. He made his mark at St. Peters College as a teacher, master-in-charge of cricket and coach for a period of ten years - having had the distinction of being manager of the Peterite cricket teams on tour to Singapore, India, Malaysia and Holland. He served in the Sri Lanka Schools Cricket Association, was a qualified umpire and coach since 1989, being promoted in 1990 as grade 1 umpire of the Association of Cricket Umpires in Sri Lanka. Hiran served as an executive member of the association for a period of six years and did duty as umpire at various levels. All this did serve him well in Auckland to qualify as level II to umpire and coach. Since 1998 Hiran for the past five years has been umpiring at various grades of cricket, chief among which, the national New Zealand club championship, the warm up trial match between the Black Caps and Auckland and representing New Zealand at the Pacific Cricket Championship hosted by Auckland Cricket Association on behalf of the International Cricket Council. |
