SLTA Playing Section takes Women's title

The People's Bank annual Inter Club Tennis tournament got under way last weekend with more than one tie providing exciting fare on the SLTA courts. The official ball of the tournament being Dunlop by the Sports Pavilion.

A record number of 45 teams, slotted into 10 divisions according to their respective strengths, are competing for tiles. The opening days matches indicated the competition will be keen and close, and the defending champions cannot take anything for granted. The men will compete in five divisions and the women in two and the veteran, three.

SLTA playing section made early inroads in the tournament when they beat Queen's Club 2-1 to win the Women's division one title with Triple Mercantile Champ Dinali de Silva and National Champion Thiyumi Abeysinghe winning their matches respectively. In the first singles Thiyumi beat Yasmin Rajapakse 6/1, 6/3 while Dinali crushed Usha Chamugam 6/2, 6/1 in barely an hour.

In Div II. The vintage duo of Suresh Subramaniam and Arjan Perera, SLTA president and vice president respectively, fared admirably against teenagers Udith Wickremasinghe and S. Shashivaran. In a battle that went beyond an hour, the schoolboys won 6/2, 4/6, 6/4. In the singles Ganenderan Subramaniam and S. Patrick of SLTA prevailed over Ghazali Ghouse and P. Mustafa respectively in three-setters. In Div II SLTA A team were assured of the title when they beat SSC 2-1 G. Subramaniam bt D. Wijesuriya; 6/3, 6/4, R. Subramaniam bt S. Patrick; U. Wickramasinghe & S. Sashiwaranan bt Shayamalan & Kaneshyogan. SLTA will play SSC to decide second place in Div II.

In Division III Peterites Tennis Club upset SSC 2/1 while in Division V Cathedral Tennis Club overcame Moratuwa University also 2/1.

SSC and SLTA Playing Section made it to the final without getting on court when Queen's Club, the only other entrant, withdrew from the competition.

The finalists of Division I of the women's event too was found in similar fashion with Queen's Club and SLTA Playing Section being the only competitors after SSC withdrew.

The Veteran's over 35 final will see SSC play SLTA, the only two teams entered. In Div III SSC bt Peterite TC 2-1; N. Gunasekara III bt O. Perera 6/1, 6/1; Dineshkanthan bt Weerasekara 1/6, 7/6, 6/3 and W. Wijesekera and A. Udeshi bt R. Rodriguez & K. Sudusinghe.
