New Deacon for Archdiocese of Colombo

Rev. Bro. Philip Motha will be ordained a Deacon on Monday, December 8 at the Sacred Heart Chapel, Archbishop's House, at 9 a.m. by His Lordship Most Rev. Dr. Marius Peiris, Auxiliary Bishop of Colombo.

Bro. Motha graduated from the University of Colombo with BSc (General) Honours, having been placed first in order of merit, winning the Cumaraswamy Prize for Science. He later joined the Government Valuation Department and proceeded to the London University on three scholarships, awarded by the Government, the British Council and the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors U. K. (Valuation). On his return he was for ten years mainly the Chief Valuer of the Special Areas (Colombo) Development Board.

Subsequently, he was in Singapore for 30 years, lecturing in his speciality at the Singapore Polytechnic crowning his career as Professor and Head of the Department of Real Estate as well as Vice-Dean of the Faculty of Architecture and Building, National University of Singapore. In 1967 he was awarded the M.Sc in Estate Management (London) for his dissertation, "Investment Yields in the Singapore Real Estate Market". He submitted his doctoral theses on "Property Taxation in Singapore", in 1971 to the London School of Economics; but, was unable to proceed to London to defend it due to a variety of personal reasons.

His wife, Lily, who was the proprietress of the flower shop "BLOSSOMS" In Ward Place, Colombo 7, predeceased him six years ago after which in the year 2000, he entered St. Peter's Pontifical Seminary, Bangalore, India, securing Diplomas in Philosophy and Theology, both with First Class Honours, returning to Sri Lanka in July this year.

He has been at different times President of the Association of Ceylon Catholics in the United Kingdom, Secretary of the Catholic Union of Sri Lanka, Chairman of the Laity Council of Singapore and President of the Local Xaverians and Chairman of the Sri Lanka Movement for Justice, Peace and Reconciliation.

In the early 1990's he was the President of the Singapore-Sri Lanka Business Association in that Republic. In 1996 he was one of the recipients of the distinguished Old Josephians Award. Presently, he is a resident of Archbishop's House, Colombo in preparation for Holy Orders next year.
