Dialog 'Change Trust Fund' partnering for education in Jaffna

Dialog GSM, Sri Lanka's premier cellular network and the pioneer of several states of the art mobile telecommunications, through its community development arm Change Trust Fund extends it partnership for education with the Asia Foundation towards the Northern Provinces of Sri Lanka.

The Asia Foundation's "Books for Asia" program donates English language educational and professional materials to hundreds of Sri Lankan institutions and organisations. These texts, which would otherwise be unaffordable and unobtainable, are selected by the recipient institutions themselves to ensure that they are appropriate for their needs.

With a renewed emphasis on English-language education in Sri Lanka, the "Books for Asia" program is more important now than ever to the nations future. This contribution will facilitate to distribute 2000 technical books and is expected to cover the cost of freight, warehousing and administration. The 2000 books were distributed among the following five universities in Sri Lanka.

1. University of Jaffna - Faculty of Science, Faculty of Computer Science; 2. University of Peradeniya - Faculty of Engineering; 3. University of Moratuwa - Faculty of Engineering; 4. University of Ruhuna - Faculty of Engineering and 5. Eastern University - Faculty of Science, Faculty of Computer Science.

Final donation of books for the year 2003 was held at the Jaffna University on October 23, Dialog GSM CEO - Dr. Hans Wijayasuriya officially handed over 400 technical books to the Vice Chancellor Prof. Mohanadas of the Engineering faculty, present at the occasion were Nushad Perera - GM - Sales & Marketing Dialog GSM and Rajkumar - Executive, MIS, Nallathamby from Asia Foundation and the Librarian - Mrs. Pararajasekaram.

Speaking on the occasion Prof. Mohanadas said that the books selected were very useful and valuable to the university and this kind of gesture was also a source of encouragement to the students. I am happy to note that the Dialog GSM has not only set a land mark as a leading wireless institution in the world but also extended its charitable arm to various activities that deserve a helping hand.
