Annual global media awards today

The twenty fourth Annual Global Media awards ceremony for excellence in population reporting jointly organised by the Population Institute and the Family Planning Association of Sri Lanka will be held today, December 3 at 7 p.m. at the Trans Asia Hotel, Colombo, announced the President, Director, the Population Institute, USA, Werner Fornos.

Mr. Fornos said that this year country award has been won by the Sri Lanka Family Planning Association which celebrates its Golden Jubilee this year. The award for best columnist has been won by Robert Scheer, Creators Syndicate. The award for the best International Daily has won by International Herald Tribune.

Time magazine has won the award for best periodical while Jeff Danziger has won the award for best editorial cartoonist. The Inter Press Service has won the award for the most conscientious news service. The award for the best editorial support on behalf of population has won by Robert Mott, the Sacramento Bee (California).

Belly button to the sun (Ombligos al sol) produced by Maria Almela has won the award for the best radio program.

The award for the best population/environmental reporting effort has won by Don Cayo, the Vancouver Sun (Canada). Studies in Family Planning published by the Population Council won the award for the best population journal. Jamaica Social Marketing Campaign implemented by Jamaica National Family Planning Board won the award for the best commercial advertising effort while Waldo Profit, Editor Emeritus, The Sarasota Heral Tribune (Florida) won the award for the lifetime journalistic achievement. The award for the best use of media in population reporting won by Concepcion Samaniego Castrejon, Mexican Radio/TV Program on reproductive health. The Population Institute Media Awards are devoted to draw attention to worldwide population issues.

The awards honour those who have contributed to creating awareness of population problems through their journalistic endeavors in a meritorious manner. The awards serve to encourage editors, news directors and journalists to acquire a more in-depth knowledge of population issues and to stimulate high standards of journalism.

The Population Institute is an international educational non profit organisation that seeks to reduce excessive population growth.

The institute strive to achieve a world population in balance with a healthy global environment and resource base.
