by Bharatha Malawaraarachchi The Health Sector Trade Union Alliance (HSTUA) which launched a four hour work stoppage yesterday has threatened a stepped up campaign if the Government fails to meet its demand pertaining to salary anomalies by today. Work in hospitals in the cities and provinces were almost crippled yesterday as HSTUA members comprising para medics nurses, technical grade staff and minor employees staged a walk out between 8am to 12 noon. They have demanded their salary anomalies be redressed by today when the Cabinet is expected to meet and take up their issue. The 8 am to 12 noon work stoppage will continue today, a Trade Union spokesman said. "Our Executive Committee will meet tomorrow where a decision on further action would be taken depending on Cabinet ruling," he added. The Government Medical Officers Association (GMOA) and the Public Services Nurses Union (PSNU) did not participate in the strike. Earlier, the HSTUA gave notice of its trade union action if the authorities failed to provide a swift solution to their salary anomalies. However, a senior Health Ministry official said the Ministry had sent their proposals together with the Treasury recommendations to the Cabinet office for Cabinet approval. "We have done our part. The Cabinet Sub Committee will now evaluate the proposals before taking any decision," the official added. A HSTUA spokesman stressed that a final solution will be taken at the next Cabinet meeting on these proposals. "Otherwise, we will be compelled to resort to islandwide trade union action," spokesman Saman Rathnapriya said. The Ministry official said the finalised proposals and Treasury recommendations were sent a few days ago to the Cabinet Office. "The trade unions are in favour of our proposals and certain recommendations of the Treasury. So we sent both reports to the Cabinet for approval," the official said. |
