Floods in Batticaloa

Heavy rains with gale force winds during the past few days have caused major floods in several areas in the Batticaloa district. A large number of families have been displaced in the floods.

Nearly 9,500 families have been displaced due to the floods in three Divisional Secretariat divisions in Batticaloa district.

Social Welfare Ministry Secretary Vijayalakshmi Jegarasasingam said about 50,000 persons have been affected by the floods. This includes 3,760 families in Koralai Pattu, 3,461 families in Eravur Pattu and another 2,240 families in Kattankudy.

"Detailed reports are flowing in only from Batticaloa and we are waiting for more reports to allocate funds", she said.

The Social Welfare Ministry has allocated Rs. 3.77 million to provide immediate relief for the victims, Jegarasasingam added.

Last week around 1,500 houses in Kotahena, Modera, Mattakkuliya, Aluth Mawatha, Bloemendhal, Wellawadiya and Ibbagewatta in the Colombo North electorate were damaged due to a gale accompanied by heavy rains.

Another 60 houses in Nalawila and Nakandala in Beruwala area were also damaged the same day.

According to the National Disaster Management Committee, 138,973 families were affected by the floods and landslides in May this year while 236 persons were killed.

The number of fully damaged houses were 9,294 while 30,260 houses were partly damaged.
