Fourteen teams in k/o soccer tourney by Kandy Sports Corr. Fourteen teams have entered the inter-club knock-out tournament organised by the Kandy Association Football League which is scheduled to get under way in the hill capital shortly. The Senior Vice President of the Kandy Association Football League Maurice Perera said that the conducting of this tournament is being considerably delayed due to unavailability of grounds. Maurice Perera told that the only good ground available in the hill capital is the Bogambara Stadium but the ground charges demanded very much high and the organisers find it difficult, as gate money cannot cover the same. Crowds could be attracted only by playing matches regularly and create a feeling of competitiveness among soccer fans. Perera said that the Bogambara stadium authorities will have to seriously consider in lowering their rates if the poor man's sport is to survive actively. Many have made representations but nothing concrete has happened. If the Bogambara stadium is not available at a lower rate, then the next alternative is for the police ground authorities to permit the playing of soccer matches at their grounds which is now exclusively for cricket and a little hockey. Perera in conclusion said that the people concerned must seriously address this problem as all efforts by the officials of the Kandy Association Football League will go waste if there is no venue to play their tournament matches. The teams which have entered the KAFL's knockout tournament are: Defending champions Kandy York SC, Hylines SC, Golden Stars SC, Katukelle United SC, Kennedy SC, Unicorn SC, Sunrise F & AC, Reliance SC, Mahaweli SC, Senkadagala Youths SC, University of Peradeniya, Gold Wings SC, Kandy Municipal SC, Sissu SC. |
