Security beefed up in Trincomalee

President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga has directed the defence authorities and the IGP to take immediate steps to bring the situation in the Trincomalee district back to normalcy.

Police also have been instructed to investigate into recent incidents in the area as well. Meanwhile, the SLMM too is continuing their investigations into those incidents. A comprehensive police report relating to the incidents, is expected within the next two days. The President's Office rejects in toto, several print media reports alleging the presence of a so-called 'third force' behind the scenario. Neither the President's Office nor any other responsible source has ever attributed the prevailing tension to any act of such a third force. It is a matter for regret that section of the media continues to express news and views on such baseless reports.

In the meantime, an Emergency Call Unit has been set in the Trincomalee SSP Office to facilitate complaints on any situation leading to confrontation or tension so that the flow of information could be expedited, either confidentially or personally.

The public in the area have been requested to contact the police over the telephone number 026-2222030, in this connection.

This unit comprises an OIC supported by 5 PCs to cover, in particular the areas of China Bay, Muttur and Kinniya. Police sources states that the already existing Trincomalee District Emergency Information Unit also continues entertaining complaints as usual, and it could be contacted on 026 2222222. These two units are expected to work right round the clock. The new unit has been established consequent to the President's instructions to the IGP to immediately investigate into recent incidents and restore normalcy in the affected areas.

Additional forces have already been deployed to maintain the security in the area, states the Presidential Secretariat press release.
