Because of their struggle dis-enfranchisement and the prolonged statelessness problems were solved. The PA, JVP and UNP branded as the communalistic parties also played important role to bring a solution to this issue, said R.K. Suresh, Director Administration Ceylon Workers Alliance. He was addressing a meeting at Nuwara Eliya CWA regional office on November 30, attended by Estate Leaders, women and youth committee leaders of Nuwara Eliya, Gonagalla, Punduloya, Ragalla and Udapussellawa districts. K. Karthigason, Industrial Relation Officer chaired the meeting. He said workers are being hoodwinked and deceived by certain opportunistic politicians boasting that they are instrumental in regaining the lost rights to protect their eroding popularity and stem their slide. But the workers lost faith in them and crossed over to other unions, which really committed to protect the rights of the working class. In order to fortify the membership strength, as this period is membership drive in the estates, certain politicians spread rumours among the workers that they patronise the branch offices to get their names registered. The workers cannot be deceived by false propaganda, he said. In conclusion, he explained the various rights and concessions obtained from the regimes of PA and SLFP and exhorted the workers not to fall prey to the false propaganda and promises and adopt the accepted procedure in obtaining their rights. District Committee Chairman S. Musthapa, S. Murugesu - District Organiser, K. Palaniyandy - District Organiser for Ragalla also spoke. |
