Two Sri Lankan gem merchants are reported to have lost all their belongings including passports and travel documents while on an Umrah pilgrimage to Makkah, Saudi Arabia enroute from the USA. The two gem merchants Mohamed Milhan of Galle Road, Colombo and Mohamed Zulfikar of China Fort, Beruwala in a complaint made to the Janubia Police station, Jeddah and the Sri Lanka Consulate in Jeddah have said they had arrived in Jeddah on November 27 enroute to Sri Lanka after a business tour of USA. From Jeddah they hired a taxi provided by an Umrah Travel Group to travel to Makkah to perform Umrah. Midway, they stopped over at a mosque for prayers. When they returned from the mosque the taxi driver was missing with their six baggages and brief cases kept in the taxi. According to the complaint, the lost items included gems worth nearly 200,000 US dollars, 16,000 US dollars and 500 Euro cash, travellers cheques valued at 40,000 US dollars, passports, travel documents and clothes. According to the Sri Lanka Consulate in Jeddah, the Janubia Police conducting investigations into the complaint are now looking for the suspect driver. Police is confident of arresting the suspect driver with the help of the Umrah Travel Group which provided the taxi. The Sri Lanka Consulate has also brought this to the notice of the Saudi Foreign Ministry branch in Makkah. It has requested the Foreign Ministry to direct relevant authorities to expedite investigations so that the two Sri Lankans could recover the lost items and return home soon. Meanwhile, the relevant Umrah Travel Group has provided accommodation to the two Sri Lankans in a Jeddah hotel so that they could stay over in Saudi Arabia to help in the investigations. |
