O/L exam running smooth

by Manjula Fernando

The GCE Ordinary Level examination commenced on schedule yesterday, despite the private bus operators advancing their island-wide strike scheduled to begin at 2 p.m., which largely inconvenienced students on the opening day of the exams.

Examinations Commissioner General Mahinda Wijesiri said according to information received, there had been no delays in commencing the examination which started at 9.00 a.m. yesterday and there was a regular attendance despite the strike.

Although the Private Bus Operators Association vowed on Sunday that an all island strike would be launched after 2.00 p.m. yesterday only if the scheduled meeting with the transport minister failed, there were no private buses on the road from morning.

The problem was less severe in rural areas because almost all students live close to schools, Wijesiri said.

Students in City schools, travelling from long distances had to find alternative travel arrangements due to the unofficial strike which spread to most parts by yesterday morning. Some students had to lodge in relatives' houses close to examination centres the previous day due to the looming bus strike, sources said.

Wijesiri said he made inquiries from Ampara, Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa and Tangalle where examination centre supervisors confirmed the examination commenced on schedule. According to the time table, two non-compulsory papers were fixed for yesterday. Sinhala, English, Arabic and Tamil literature papers were to be answered from 9.00 a.m. to 12 noon while a one hour History paper was to be answered in the afternoon.
