Family Planning Association of Sri Lanka named winner of Global Media Award

Colombo - The Family Planning Association of Sri Lanka, now in its 50th year of operation, has been announced the winner of a special Global Media Award for Excellence in Population Reporting in recognition of its successful leadership of the country's population program.

The organization will be honoured for its work in providing clinical family planning services, creating awareness of reproductive health issues among youth and offering services to youth through counselling centners, states a World Population News Service press release.

The Washington. D.C. based Population Institute presents the annual awards to honour journalists, print and electronic media organizations, and others that have made outstanding contributions to greater awareness of population, environment and resource issues. This year's awards will be presented December 3 at the Trans Asia Hotel here.

Conception Samaniego Castrejon will be honoured for best use of media in population reporting. Her radio programs, aired in the Mexican state of Durango, address issues ranging from family planning methods to adolescent pregnancy and the sexual and reproductive rights of young people.

TIME Magazine has been named best periodical for its special issue entitled "How to Save the Earth," an in-depth exploration of the most pressing environmental issues facing the planet today, as well as the individuals and groups combating them.

Robert Mott of the Sacramento Bee (California) will be the recipient of the best editorial support award for his commentary criticizing the Bush administration's attempts to compromise international agreements on population stabilization efforts.

The Jamaican National Family Planning Board will be the winner in the best commercial advertising effort category for its contraceptive pill social marketing campaign, specifically targeting sexually active youth in that country.

For its timely news reports covering a wide range of sustainable development issues and consistent focus on population and international family planning, Inter Press (IPS) will be recognized as most conscientious news service.

Selected as best radio program is Ombligos al Sol ("bellybuttons to the sun"), produced by Maria Almela of Mexico to raise awareness of important health and social issues faced by young people in Mexico City.

Waldo Profitt, former editor of the Sarasota Herald Tribune (Florida), will receive a Lifetime Jounrlistic Achievement Award for his many contributions to raising awareness of population related issues throughout his long and distinguished newspaper career.

The Population Council's Studies in Family Planning, a peer-reviewed international quarterly journal concerned with all aspects of reproductive health, fertility regulation and family planning, has been named the best population journal.

Don Cayo of the Vancouver Sun (Canada) will be the winner of the best population/environment reporting category for his feature report, "One Island, Two Worlds," chronicling the perils facing Haiti and its neighbour, the Dominican Republic, as a result of environmental degradation and resource depletion.

Robert Scheer, whose columns appear in the Los Angeles Times and are syndicated to more than 20 U.S. metropolitan dailies by Creators syndicate, has been named best columnist. His winning entry was a critique of the Bush administration's efforts to derail international agreements on the stabilization of world population.

The best cartoonist award will be presented to Jeff Danzinger (Tribune Media), whose efforts effectively capture the implications of reduced U.S. funding for international population programs. For its global reach and extensive coverage of population, resource conservation and environmental issues and for advocating international population assistance on its editorial pages, the International Herald Tribune will receive the best international daily award.

The awards are to be presented by Sri Lanka's president, Hon. Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga. In previous years, the Global Media Awards have been presented by the heads of state of the Philippines, Nepal, the Netherlands, Senegal, Turkey and Tanzania.
