CCC's Business Information Portal wins National ICT Excellence Award

The business information portal of the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce (CCC), www.bip.lk, has won a bronze medal at the National Best Quality Software Awards competition organised by the British Computer Society (Sri Lanka Chapter) and the Computer Society of Sri Lanka.

The state-of-the-art business information system won bronze in the e-commerce and e-business category, coming behind the Sri Lankan Airlines portal, which won silver. There was no gold awarded this time.

www.bip.lk was selected to represent Sri Lanka under the e-commerce category at the Asia Pacific ICT Awards Competition to be held in Thailand later this year.

"A lot of effort by a lot of partners went into this achievement.

I congratulate them for the good work done," said CCC chairman Tilak de Zoysa.

Owned and managed by the CCC, this award-winning business information portal is a unified web-based information system that links entrepreneurs and service providers throughout the country via the information super- highway. Accessible for a fee, it enables customers to download valuable and up-to-date business information. Additionally, it allows regional trade chambers to directly upload information relevant to them, which can be accessed by others. The portal will also aggregate a number of national and regional data sources that contain business related information.

www.bip.lk is conceptualised and supported by the Sri Lanka-German Enterprise Information Project (EIP). The EIP is jointly implemented by the CCC, Ministry of Policy Development and Implementation and the German Technical Cooperation (GTZ) with funding from the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development. The portal is designed and powered by DMS Software Technologies (Pvt) Ltd. To enable better participation by regional entrepreneurs in this information exchange, the EIP has set up access centres at trade chambers covering different growth regions and sectors within Sri Lanka. At present, such centres are functioning in Colombo, Kurunegala, Jaffna, Matale, Matara, Hambantota, Kandy, and Ratnapura.

"This is a tool to be used for the purpose of linking business persons from around the country with one another and with representative trade chambers and government bodies.

Eventually we hope it will link the Sri Lankan players with global players," said Udo Gartner, senior advisor of the EIP.

"But it is only as good as its users. Its up to the users themselves to further expand the network," he said. According to CCC's Assistant Secretary General Lilakshini de Mel of the 500 plus membership of the Ceylon Chamber, already more than 350 members are using www.bip.lk in their work.
