Lanka Bell sponsors SSC's premier cricket

by Richard Dwight

Last Wednesday turned out to be significant for the Singhalese Sports Club (SSC) and Lanka Bell.

What appeared to be a productive partnership between the two was established.

Tangible expression of this was made by the opening of the 'Bell House Pavilion' sponsored by Lanka Bell which is a key element in the 3 year renewable contract awarded to Lanka Bell for the exclusive sponsorship of premier league cricket at the SSC.

This was further cemented by the exchange of sponsorship agreement for the sponsorship of SSC 'Premier Division Cricket' the handing of branded cricket gear to SSC cricketers and the handing of contracts to SSC cricketers by the Chairman, Cricket House Committee, SSC Mahinda Halangoda - indeed a high order of commitment in the course of cricket at SSC by Lanka Bell.

The 'Bell House Pavilion' tickets for the current 3 Test matches was handed to the GM, Finance Operations, Lanka Bell, Suren Goonewardena by Halangoda.

The 'Bell House Pavilion' is furnished with 250 seats of which 50 cushioned seats would be positioned in a special air-conditioned enclosure with bar and catering facilities reserved for guests of Lanka Bell referred to as the 'hospitality box'.

The MD and CEO Lanka Bell, Joey Mendoza speaking on the occasion expressed his pleasure in Lanka Bell having its own corporate hospitality box in the SSC grounds that would give them the opportunity to organise corporate hospitality events during international, club and school cricket matches played at the SSC. Equally pleased was he that they were appointed as the official sponsor of a prestigious cricket club with an enviable history that spans over 100 years having produced many renowned cricketers who have excelled in local club cricket and as well in international tests and one day matches.

As the official sponsor Mendoza made known that Lanka Bell will provide 25 SSC premier cricket team members - playing, as well as practise clothing attire including T-shirts and caps and sponsor the annual cricket match between SSC and NCC for the J. R. Jayewardene Trophy.

Goonewardena said that Lanka Bell has been associated with Sri Lanka cricket since the inception of the company in 1997 and reminded the gathering that they were the first fixed line operator to provide lines to the World Cup winning team in 1996. He continued to tell that apart from the facility of free tickets, Lanka Bell will also have prominent locations at the SSC cricket grounds reserved exclusively for their branding.

Halangoda said cricket at the club was assisted by the other activities in the club but now it will be self-supportive with the signing of this agreement with 'Lanka Bell' for a period of three years that involves a commitment of Rs. 6 million all told.

Halangoda concluded by saying that SSC were looking for a sponsor who would enable to maintain its high standard and Lanka Bell just matched it which augurs well for the cricketers of SSC. The General Secretary of SSC, Mohan de Silva said they were setting off on a new journey with Lanka Bell adding value for money with many things lined one of which will be the obtaining of a sophisticated state of the art sprinkler.
