LTTE assurance to respect ceasefire good answer to extremist forces, says MP

by Lionel Yodhasinghe

The assurance given by the LTTE leadership to the Norwegian peace brokers to respect the ceasfire and continue it further is a good answer to extremist forces and certain media who try to create unfounded fears and tension in the society.

Those forces backed by petty politicians fabricate stories misleading the people and try to convince them that taking over of three ministries by the President would drag the country into war again, Parliamentarian Nimal Siripala de Silva told the Executive Committee meeting of the Organisation of Professionals of Sri Lanka Freedom Party in Colombo yesterday.

Certain state and private media institutions carried biased news soon after the take over of these ministries and tried to mislead people and provoke them that the situation would run the economy into destruction and disrupt the day-to-day life. Prabhakaran's assurance to continue the ceasefire has denied such false stories, he said.

State television which was run by money-minded persons who took the social and cultural values to ransom had done a heavy damage to society. One reason to take over the media ministry is to tackle this to some extent and rescue the younger generation from this social deterioration, he said.

De Silva said that the President did not expect the state media to blow a trumpet for her nor for the SLFP but she humbly expects them to play a balanced role to keep the public informed of the truth especially of the development of the peace process.

He also said that the unity of the politicians is a must at this moment and the meeting between the President and the Prime minister is a very good sign of political and national unity. The international community and the donors have been asking for it. The LTTE too waiting for such unity among politicians in the South to begin peace talks.

"We hope the Prime Minister would uphold his commitment towards lasting peace and respond optimistically to the President's invitation to create national reconciliation", the MP said.
