Cash award for brave housemaid

From Mohammed Rasooldeen in Riyadh

The Sri Lankan housemaid who rescued two of her sponsor's children trapped in the house soon after Saturday's bomb blast here will be awarded a cash prize for her bravery, Sri Lankan Ambassador Ibrahim Sahib Ansar said.

Vaidraliyage S. Dissanayake Jayakody, 28, injured in the blast on the apartment's ground floor had run upstairs with her injuries to get the two children out of the house.

The maid was reported to have fainted after she had handed over the two children to the security officials present at the time of the incident.

The Daily News on November 11 reported Jayakody's brave act. Ansar addressing an Ifthar party organised by the mission on Thursday, said the Lankan mission was the first to visit the venue of the blast. The envoy said the prize money will be given by the Riyadh based Sri Lankan Expatriates Society (SLES). Commending the housemaid's act, Ansar said the action has earned a good name for the country and she has set an example to be emulated by other fellow Sri Lankans in the Kingdom.

He also cited another case of a Sri Lankan maid who had run away due to misunderstandings with the sponsor, two days before the blast from a house where all the inmates had died in the explosion.

The ambassador said Foreign Minister Tyronne Fernando was the first to give a call from Colombo to find out the position of the Sri Lankans upon hearing about the blast. It was the minister who instructed the envoy to assist the affected Sri Lankans and report to Colombo. Ansar said Foreign Ministry officials in Colombo had been active in monitoring the situation of Sri Lankans during calamities abroad.

More than 1,000 Sri Lankans attended the Ifthar party. The party was open to all Sri Lankan expatriates in the Saudi capital.
