'Special place to handicrafts industry' by S. M. Jiffrey Abdeen The traditional handicrafts of the Polonnaruwa and Anuradhapura area has been preserved for posterity as a result of the Central province taking the cue and giving it due prominence, said Central province Minister of Industries, Estate Infrastructure Facilities, Education, Mines and Mineral Development, Social Services and Rehabilitation and Animal Husbandry Affairs V. Radhakrishnan. He said this when he addressed the 'Attham Viskam' Handicraft Exhibition held at the Ministry's Complex at Getambe in Kandy. Minister Radhakrishnan said in Sri Lanka the Central Province gives pride of place to the handicrafts industry and as a result, handicraft products from the Central Province have won awards at national level and have been exhibited in countries like India, Sweden and Germany where they have received wide acclaim. Deputy High Commissioner of India in Sri Lanka A. Malhothra, Secretary to the Ministry Vijitha Bandara, Co-ordinating Secretary M. Duraisamy, Keerthi Ratnayake and Rohini Jayaratne were present on the occasion. |
