Army to set up new office to deal with deserters by Ramani Kangaraarahchi The pilot project launched by the Army recently to issue discharge certificates to deserters from the Gampaha district was successful. We have issued 727 discharge certificates so far and the Army HQ is to set up a new office at the Malay Street camp to resolve the administrative problems which have arisen at the issuing of discharge certificates shortly, said Major General Ivan Dasanayake, Adjutant General of the Army. The proposed office to be operated at Malay Street camp will sort out various shortcomings in the pilot project according to Gen Dasanayake. Over 200O deserters have reported during the given grace period. An unexpected administrative problem, however had arisen when the authorities could not find the personal files of many deserters from the Gampaha Kachcheri. Those deserters had settled down in the Gampaha district later without informing the Army of their change on addresses. "The number of deserters in the Gampaha district should be less than 5000 accordingly. That is why we decided to operate a new office to clear this matter," Major General Dasanayake said. The deserters in question have been informed to report at the Malay Street office by the Army HQ. Meanwhile, issuing of discharge certificates to 3000 deserters in the Kalutara district will commence in mid January 2004. The decision to issue discharge certificates to Army deserters was taken as a result of some deserters getting involving in crime. |
