Over 9 percent increase in tourist arrivals in September

COLOMBO, Nov. 14 (Lankapuvath) - In September 2003 a total of 36,054 tourists arrived in Sri Lanka which shows an increase of 9.3 percent compared to the corresponding month in 2002.

This is also an all time high of tourist arrivals recorded for the month of September since 1967. The cumulative tourist arrivals for the first nine months of this year recorded an increase of 21.9 pc. over the same period last year, senior official of the Sri Lanka Tourist Board said.

During the month of September 2003 tourist arrivals from Western Europe showed an increase of 8.6 pc when compared to the same month last year major markets. UK, France, Italy and Netherlands showed increases of 7.3 pc, 33.9 pc, 74.4 pc. and 70.9 pc respectively while Germany recorded a decrease of 17.3 pc. UK positioned as the second major tourist generating market to Sri Lanka during the month. All other markets except Denmark (-15.0 pc), Belgium (-18.6 pc), Switzerland (-34.5 pc) and Norway (-62.8 pc) showed increase during the month.

Arrivals from South Asia and East Asia recorded increases of 12.0 pc and 9.3 pc respectively when compared to the figures of the same month in 2002. Considering the major markets of this region India showed an increase of 9.6 pc and positioned as the major tourist generating market to Sri Lanka.

However arrivals from the North American region recorded a decrease of 1.9 pc mainly due to the decrease in arrivals from Canada (-8.8 pc) when compared to the same month last year.

Australasia recorded an increase of 4.1 pc mainly due to the increases in arrivals from Australia (0.3 pc) and New Zealand (19.6 pc). Other regions namely Middle East (6.4 pc), Latin America and the Caribbean (40.0 pc) and the Eastern Europe (49.1 pc) showed an increase while Africa declined by 7.6 pc during the month.
