Cricket and fireflies at historic Dambulla

Cricket lovely cricket, at Lords where I saw it ....goes the Caribbean cricket calypso that took Sri Lanka by storm almost two generations ago.Did we then dream that lovely cricket would be played at historic Dambulla fifty years on? Well, that's the stuff that history like dreams, is made of.

To come down to earth, the England team is here, and with it, thousands of British tourists--mainly cricket buffs, of course--and others interested in Sri Lanka as well--and tours are being offered dime a dozen.

Target Travels (Pvt) Ltd which was launched some months ago, is sounding the trumpets for its 'Catch the Cricket Action LIVE in Dambulla for the Sri Lanka vs. England one day-nighter.

The Target programme is full of promise; On Tuesday the 18th, the meeting point will be at Ranfer Tea, Duplication Road. The luxury coach load of tourists will proceed to Pelawatte for breakfast, then drive to Dambulla in time for buffet lunch at the enchanting Namala Resort under its thatched roof where its charming chef and staff serve sizzling food with sizzling smiles.

On to the international-class Rangiri Dambulla Stadium for the match. Although Dambulla is in the dry zone of the island, night temperatures can cool down pleasantly when the fireflies come out to add their fire to the proceedings.

At 11 p.m. it will be transferred to Namala Resort or Dambulla Oya Family Park for the overnight stay.Departure for Colombo is on Wednesday the 19th at 8.00 a.m. after breakfast at there respective hotels.

The Dambulla package includes match tickets for grandstand seats, accommodation on triple/quadruple share basis--and, most important, a tour guide with a cricketing background.

TARGET is on e-mail : [email protected]

Travel tips - Room to move

Savvy travellers are known to ask for the front bulkhead seats in economy to get a little extra leg-room. But are they the best place to sit? After all, bulkhead seats offer no storage space in the seat in front and are often near the lavatory and galley, creating extra noise and traffic. Some tips on maximising your space in economy.

Ask! the best way to get a good seat is to request one. Counter agents will often do what is most convenient for the airline, not you. Seat assignments can sometimes be booked by a travel agent in advance.

Make sure you get a seat that reclines. The last rows in a cabin section and rows near emergency exits often have seats that don't tilt back.

Spread out. When travelling as a couple on a flight that isn't full, ask for the aisle and window seats, in the hope that no-one will take the middle seat. If someone does get it, offer them the aisle or window to reunite.

Request seats near the front of the cabin. Meals are often served earlier and you can get off quicker when deplaning.

Show up early. The best seats go first, so don't wait until the last minute to ask for a good spot.

Size matters. Larger planes have more room. Some airlines will run a smaller, older plane and a gleaming new 747 jumbo jet on the same route at different times. Get on the big one if you can. If you are on more than a short hop in economy, it is worth the time to do a little research in advance and see where you would like to be seated.

Many airlines offer seating charts on their web sites. Check out Singapore Airlines ( singaporeair.com ), Malaysia Airlines (malaysiaairlines.com.my) and Cathay Pacific (cathaypacific.com). Philippine Airlines has no seating charts online, but it does give a run-down of the planes it flies at philippine-airlines.com.
