Film festival to honour contribution to cinema :

KAW notches up five decades of reel life

The K.A.W. Perera felicitation ceremony will be held at the BMICH on November 19 at 7.00 pm. The event is organised by the EAP Group in honour of his contribution towards the local cinema.

One of Sinhala cinema's most versatile directors K.A.W. Perera chalks up a landmark in his cinematic career next week as he completes over five decades in the celluloid industry.

In a fitting tribute to the maestro, a felicitation ceremony has been organised coupled with a film festival screening the works of K.A.W. to be held at the BMICH next week.

K.A.W. as he was known had the ideal grounding to develop his talents working alongside Dr. Lester James Peiris the doyen of film directors, in films such as "Sandesaya" and "Rekhawa" in the late fifties.

During this same period he also had the good fortune to be involved with the Serendib Group in their groundbreaking productions Ranmuthuduwa, Getawarayo and Sarawita.

Gleaning from Lester's classic cinema mould and the Serendib's more commercial oriented style K.A.W. struck the ideal balance mixing entertainment with an acceptable storyline and churned out box office smashers that enlivened audiences.

He directed 26 films in his career spanning 50 years with Senasuma Kothanada as his first venture. The film which starred Gamini Fonseka became an instant hit with songs such as "Malsara" and "Sulang Kurullo" popular to this day.

Then came other block busters such as Kapatikama, Bicycle Hora, Seeye Nottuwa, Ihatha Athmaya, Lokuma Hinawa which were filled with entertainment.

A special feature in K.A.W's films was that the songs which had catchy melodies were never copied from Hindi films as was the common practice but were a unique blend of Oriental and Western music whose direction was left in the capable hands of Premasiri Khemadasa.

Having left the teaching profession in 1955, he joined Radio Ceylon and contributed to a number of popular radio programs at the time. His cinematic career started as a dialogue writer for Dr. Lester's acclaimed film " Rekhawa " in 1956 and with that start, he became the most sought after dialogue writer for Sinhala films and made an able contribution to many films that followed.

The year 1966 was the landmark in his journey in cinema.

He directed his first film "Sanasuma Kothanada" and with the success of the maiden effort KAW was to become a household name. He amply contributed to the sustainability of the industry.

During his career, KAW had been bestowed with a number of awards including Sarasaviya, Deepashika, Swarna Hansa, Swarna Jayanthi, Rana Thisara, Sumathi awards etc. He was also honoured at the Tashkent Film Festival (1975) for his film " Lasanda " and also won the best film director award at the OCIC film festival in Rome in 1976 for the same film.

Today, KAW in his late seventies with an undiminished zest for cinema, still alert and active, is directing the film "Sumendha " for the national film corporation.

Looking back over career spanning half a century, K.A.W. would easily fall into the category of directors who chartered a new course for the Sinhala Cinema and contributed to its revival.
