Nearly 100 Japanese surfers here for ranking tournament

by Bernard Perera

Japan Professional Surf Association's (JPSA) final ranking championship is to be held in Sri Lanka from November 15 to 17 at Hikkaduwa JPSA organisers six events for the year to do the rankings for the year concerned, said SriLankan Airlines Country Manager in Japan Kaushal Seneviratne speaking to Daily News from Japan.

He added that earlier JPSA was held in Bali one and the balance five in Japanese seas. In 1991 SriLankan Airlines with a view to encourage tourism tapped JPSA and won the bid to transfer one event the final of the series to Sri Lankan waters. This won the hearts of the organisers, said Seneviratne.

JPSA has now fixed the final to be held in Sri Lanka every year, reducing their number to four.

This he said "is a boost to Sri Lanka's tourism industry and the SriLankan Airlines". This year's event sponsored by SriLankan Airlines will see 93 Japanese surfers in action on these three days in Hikkaduwa, said Seneviratne.

The event held in 2001 attracted 32 surfers but SriLankan Airlines sponsorship and organisation has brought in good results rising the number to 93 surfers, he said.

He further added that this year only men's event will be worked off.

With 93 Japanese surfers arriving in Sri Lanka there will be more surfing fans and supporters coming along with them, he said, which gives the opportunity to spread the tourism promotional work as well as the sports promotion in our shores.

The first four surfers are to receive cash awards amounting to 4,000 US dollars, 2,700, 1,350, 650 and 450 respectively.
