"Today the UNP is handled by the likes of S.B.Dissanayake, Ravi Karunanayake, Prof.G.L Peiris, and Rajitha Senaratne under the Wickremesinghe government, with no place for its senior party members who formed the backbone of that party," he said. "The UNP still has people like Gamini Jayawickrema Perera, P.Dayaratne, Lakshman Seneviratne and Rukman Senanayake, Karu Jayasuriya and a few others who love this country," he said and pointed out the importance of their role in any alliance the President may want to form with the Government. Speaking on the importance of forming a national alliance, Karunaratne said it is was very important today for Sri Lanka to rise up from the situation of depending on extremist minority political parties to set up its governments. The Sihala Urumaya leader said he agreed in principle with the President's idea of forming a government of national unity, but said that her attempts will be in vain should she form that alliance with a faction of so-called powerful ministers in the UNP. |
