Udayakantha continues creative flow
Rasa Diya Dahara next

Is the local film industry facing a crisis? Are the directors starving for new productions? But not well-known director Udayakantha Warnasooriya who is now gearing himself for his next celluloid creation.

While one of his films Yakada Pihatu (Iron Feathers) is being screened in town and another Diya Yata Gindara being lined up for release, probably the beginning of next year, Udayakantha has got the opportunity to do another.

When contacted, Udayakantha said the film's name would be Rasa Diya Dahara but declined to reveal the story." It is based on a true story which occurred sometime ago," Udayakantha says. It seems Udayakantha prefers to take true stories for his celluloid creations which in turn helps him to attract more people to the cinema to experience his films.

"I have no problem with producers as I get ample invitations for producing films," Udayakantha says. The problem is he does not have time to cater to the demand.

Usually, Udayakantha spends over six months to create a film. "This compels me to do one film per year although there are invitations from producers to do more films," he added.

Newspaper and commercial artist turned film director, Udayakantha has focused on many aspects of human nature, family life, underworld, politics and youth problems in his films.

"I never learnt the film medium as a subject, it was more trial and error" Udayakantha noted. The shooting of his next film would commence later this month in Colombo, Diyatalawa and Divulapitiya. Udayakantha plans to complete the shooting within 50 days. The film is produced by Neil Ranjith Palliyaguru for P.G. Films.

The cast comprises Tony Ranasinghe, Sanath Gunathilake, Henry Jayasena, Geetha Kumarasinghe, Kamal Addaraarachchi, Jackson Anthony, Mahendra Perera. Another noteworthy feature is the joining of veteran actress Anula Karunathilake who will feature in a film after a lapse of several years, says Udayakantha.

The camera is by Jayanth Gunawardena while the assistant director is Donald Jayantha. His latest creation Diya Yata Gindara - a detective type film as Udayakantha explains will be released next March.

Yakada Pihatu (Iron Feathers) which is now screening in the town will reach 75 days next week, adding another success for Udayakantha's varied film career.
