The Mahapola Trust Fund has embarked on an islandwide programme to upgrade the standard of a large number of under developed schools with the aim of bringing them into the level of recognised Schools in the country.

Under this project the selected schools would receive new buildings, renovation of the existing buildings, and establishment of new libraries and sports grounds along with many more facilities which would result in a large number of School Children benefiting from the project, a press release of the Commerce Ministry said

The Mahapola Trust Fund is planning to implement this at district level while already the first phase of the project started recently from Kotte in the Colombo district. Schools such as Sri Jayawaradenapura Maha Vidyalaya, Sri Jayawaradenapura Balika Vidyalaya, Hewavitharana Vidayalaya, St. Joseph Boys School, St. Thomas's School and the Presidents College will be given attention under this new project.

Total investment for this task is Rs. 50 million and the Minister of Commerce and Consumer Affairs Ravi Karunanayake said he would take steps to complete the upgrading of the standard of these schools within four months.
