Ifthar for Mahara prisoners

The All Ceylon Muslim League with the co-operation of the Mahara Prison Authority and Mahara Mosque, Ragama have organised 'Ifthar' and 'Tharaviya prayers' during the month of Ramazan for the Muslim prisoners at the Mahara prison and Ramazan Festival Treat for them on Id-ul-Fitr day.

These arrangements have been made by A. H. M. Azwer, Minister of Parliamentary Affairs, Chairman, All Ceylon Muslim League Religious Committee, Al Haj A. L. M. Hashim, PC, President, All Ceylon Muslim League, Al Haj Fauzul Khalid and Al Haj Ismeth Ghouse, Joint Secretaries of All Ceylon Muslim League and Al Haj M. A. M. Nusky, Treasurer, All Ceylon Muslim League.

Death of Comrade H. G. S. Ratnaweera

The Communist Party of Sri Lanka announces with deep sorrow the death of Comrade H. G. S. Ratnaweera, founding leader of the Communist Party of Sri Lanka, former Advisory Editor of 'Aththa'. The remains will be at his residence at No. 7/2, Muhandiram Dabare Mawatha, Narahenpita, Colombo 5.

Comrade Ratnaweera has been a member of the party's Central Committee, Polit Buro, Secretariat and other leading bodies. He was a member of Colombo Municipal Council for several terms.

The funeral arrangements will be notified later.

Flood relief for SLAF personnel

Cash donations were made to the service and civil personnel of the SLAF whose houses and properties were lost or damaged due to the recent floods. The donations were made under the patronage of the Commander of the Air Force Air Marshal G.D. Perera and the Board of Directors at the Air Force Headquarters on October 31. A sum of Rupees 2.5 million was distributed among 84 personnel. Here, the Commander of the Air Force Air Marshal G.D. Perera donating a cheque to Sergeant B.A.D. Rohan. Air Vice Marshal J.L.C. Salgado (Chief of Staff), Air Vice Marshal O.D.N.L. Perera (Director Aeronautical Engineering), Air Vice Marshal S.R. Weerasinghe (Director Training) and Air Commodore R.M.P.H. Dassanayake (Director, Welfare) are also in the picture.

Joint symposium

The Human Resource Development, Education and Cultural Affairs Ministry in collaboration with the UNICEF will hold a joint symposium on Catch Up Education (CUE) in the North and East on November 7 at the BMICH.

In the current post conflict situation, the Education Ministry jointly with the UNICEF launched an in-depth study to assess current services available for CUE, to look at different interpretations of CUE and make recommendations for improvement.

This concept has been implemented in several districts in the North and East Provinces as a means to support those students whose schooling was disrupted by war, help those who dropped out of school and the others who never got enroled as well as low achievers.

The symposium will be held under the patronage of Education Minister Dr. Karunasena Kodituwakku. The panel discussions will be led by Ministry Secretary V.K. Nanayakkara.

HR Forum in Kandy

The Institute of Personnel Management in Sri Lanka will launch the Kandy HR Forum on November 9 at 9 a.m. at the Suiss Hotel in order to extend the IPM facilities and services to the Kandy District. HR practitioners in Kandy, Matale districts are welcome to attend this forum free of charge.

Jayadeva de Silva FIPM, consultant PGIA University of Peradeniya will deliver the keynote address on the "Role of Human Resource Management in developing national economy".

This event is organized by the Membership Development Committee.

Heart patient needs your help

A. P. Vimukthi Satyanja, of Badulla Road, Hela Halpe, Bandarawela, a grade 2 student of Halpe Madya Maha Vidyalaya is suffering from an acute heart ailment. Dr. Aruna Kapuruge, Consultant Cardio Thoracic Surgeon, Sri Jayewardenepura General Hospital has recommended urgent heart surgery for the repair of ASD to save his life. The surgery, disposables and drugs is estimated to cost Rs. 300,000. Vimukthi's father A. P. Wimalanatha Abeyratne says the President's Fund had allocated a part of the funds amounting to Rs. 110,000. He is unable to find the balance money needed due to his present economic plight. He requests philanthropists and the general public to assist his son's cause by sending whatever financial contributions possible to meet the balance cost. All contributions should be remitted to account number 0-004608-6 at the Bank of Ceylon, Bandarawela Branch.

Maths Day of Royal College

The 2003 Maths Day of Royal College, Colombo will be held on November 6 at the Navarangahala.

Dr. W. Ramasinghe will be the chief guest. The awards ceremony for the maths competition will commence at 2.15 p.m. A record number of 65 schools from various parts of the island will participate.

"Exploring reality" is the theme of the Maths Day. Dr. Ramasinghe is expected to talk on exploring the reality - Mathematics competition problems. The guest of honour, former Royal College, Principal H. L. B. Gomes and the new Principal, Upali Gunasekara will grace the occasion.
