Case re-fixed for November 17 by Wasantha Ramanayake The Supreme Court yesterday re-fixed for support the Fundamental Right application concerning fingerprinting British Visa Applicants for November 17. The Bench comprised Chief Justice Sarath N. Silva PC, and Justices Dr. (Mrs.) Shirani Bandaranayake and P. Edussuriya. Two petitioners including Mangala Samaraweera MP and another stated that the British High Commission had initiated the said project with effect from July 23 and was in violation of the Fundamental Rights of the people. They further alleged that the government had approved the said project in violation of the rights of the people. Earlier, Additional Solicitor General Saleem Marsoof PC submitted that the Sri Lankan government had not approved the said project but petitioners' counsel Wijedasa Rajapakse PC contended that in terms of an interview given to a Sunday newspaper dated July 27, by the first respondent, the government had done so. Petitioners cited the Foreign Minister, the Prime Minister and the Cabinet of Ministers, Acting Secretary to the President and the Attorney General as respondents. The case was fixed for support for Leave for November 17. |
