Nipunatha job fair brings good results

by Anjana Gamage

" Nipunatha job fair" organised recently by the Sri Lanka Vocational Training Authority (SLVTA) which offers 'on the spot' job opportunities was able to provide 46 local employment and several foreign employment opportunities for skilled youth from all parts of the country, the "Daily News" learns.

According to the Director of Job Placement and Career Guidance Division of the Sri Lanka Vocational Training Authority, L.H.O. Abayagunawardena, a total of 5591 have registered for foreign employment at the Nipunatha job fair and it is expected that 3000 of them will get foreign jobs in April 2004.

Of 1362 who registered for local employment, 46 have been placed with 'on the spot' job opportunities at Sri Lanka Army, Navy and other private sector companies.

"Job placement was our main objective at this fair. Those who had undergone proper training at the Vocational Training Authority (VTA) or at the National Apprentices and Industrial Training Authority (NAITA), will easily get jobs locally as well as overseas. The Sri Lanka Foreign Employment Bureau says that plenty of foreign job opportunities are available in the Middle-East, Qatar and Cyprus especially in the construction, auto-mobile engineering, auto electrical and carpentry, driving and computer technology fields. Therefore, the foreign job opportunity market at this year's Nipunatha job fair was highly successful, Director Abayagunawardena said.

" Those who are not qualified for employment will be advised to follow various job oriented courses at the Vocational Training Authority (VTA), the National Apprentices and Industrial Training Authority (NAITA), the National Youth Services Council (NYSC) and Department of Technical Education Training (DTET). A loan of Rs.25,000 to 30,000 will be granted to those who want to start self-employment projects in their respective career fields", he said.
