Azwer meets striking fishermen

Minister of Parliamentary Affairs and Chairman of Puttlam District Development Committee A. H. M. Azwer had a long discussion last Saturday with the Kalpitiya fishermen who are continuing their strike campaign against the injustice caused to them by restriction placed on their traditional mode of fishing and deprivation of their livelihood by the influx of fishermen from elsewhere to Kalpitiya.

These fishermen on strike have threatened to convert their campaign to a hunger strike Fishermen belonging to all three communities are jointly staging this protest.

Minister Azwer subsequently got in touch with the Minister of Fisheries and Ocean Resources Minister Mahinda Wijesekere who is abroad and briefed him of the serious situation and appealed to him to take prompt action to solve the problem faced by the Kalpitiya fishermen. The Minister was accompanied by M. I. B. Hafi, Wayamba Provincial Councillor.

Minister Wijesekere who is expected to return to the island told Minister Azwer to meet soon after he arrives to find a solution to the problem. On Saturday, Minister Azwer visited Kalpitiya and met the fishermen on strike and requested them to abandon the fast and that he would make representations to the fisheries Minister with a view to solving their problem.
