Four policemen arrested for mugging

DHAKA, Sunday (AFP)

Four policemen were arrested for allegedly mugging two businessmen in the Bangladeshi capital Dhaka where residents have been protesting against police abuses, a newspaper said Sunday.

The four, who included a sub-inspector, were sent Saturday to Dhaka Central Jail after residents caught them stealing about 200,000 taka (3,450 dollars) from the businessmen, The Daily Star said, quoting police. Part of the money was recovered from the policemen, the report said. The four arrested and three other policemen who remain at large face trial.

The four policemen were caught by residents of Dhaka's Khilgaon area where the full staff of the police station was replaced after public demonstrations against alleged abuses, the report said.

Residents protested against a series of incidents including the alleged custodial death of a 22-year-old man, it said.

The Ajker Kagoj daily said 3,000 complaints were lodged against policemen around Bangladesh to the headquarters in Dhaka in the past year and action has been taken against nearly half of them.
