New Zealand beat Wales 53-37 SYDNEY, Nov 2 (Reuters) New Zealand edged out Wales 53-37 in a pulsating World Cup match on Sunday to seal top spot in pool D and set up a quarter-final against South Africa. Wales, who produced by far their best performance of the tournament and led the All Blacks 37-33 midway through the second half, will face pool C winners England in the last eight. New Zealand winger Joe Rokocoko scored two early tries but Wales hit back with a fine try from centre Mark Taylor and a penalty by flyhalf Stephen Jones. New Zealand extended their lead when centre Leon McDonald crossed the line and lock Ali Williams gathered a cross-kick to put the All Blacks 28-10 ahead. Centre Sonny Parker then finished off a flowing Welsh move and flanker Colin Charvis dived over, both tries converted by Jones, to reduce the deficit to 28-24 at halftime. Jones kicked another penalty early in the second half and winger Shane Williams crossed in the left corner for a converted try that put Wales 34-28 ahead. New Zealand winger Doug Howlett burst through a small gap to bring his side to within a point and, after Jones kicked another penalty, flyhalf Carlos Spencer sprinted over the line to edge the All Blacks 38-37 ahead. Howlett touched down in the right corner to give the All Blacks breathing space and centre Aaron Mauger's late try finally killed off the Welsh. |
