Western Province clinch President's Trophy

Welagedera, Kurunegala, Sunday - Western Province with a total of 62 gold medals won the overall championship and the President's Trophy at the 29th National Sports Festival organised and conducted by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports and concluded at the Welagedera Stadium in Kurunegala here today.

Western Province also dominated the track and field events and finished with 43 silver medals and 29 bronze medals. Central Province emerged as the runners up with 35 gold medals, 22 silver medals and 30 bronze medals. North Western Province were placed third with 20 gold medals, 16 silver medals and 18 bronze medals.

Southern Province managed to win only eight gold medals, 16 silver and 24 bronze medals while Sabaragamuwa Province and North central Province won five gold medals each.

Uva Province managed only six silver medals and 12 medals and North East Province collected six bronze medals.

In addition Western Province also won the men's overall championship for team events and Central Province won the women's overall championship for team events. Meanwhile Sampath Weerasinghe and Sriyani Kulawansa Fonseka both from North Western Province were selected as the most outstanding male athlete and female athlete respectively. Weerasinghe won the men's triple jump with a superb effort of 15.67 metres while Sriyani Kulawansa powered her way to win the women's 100 metres hurdles with a timing of 14.23 seconds.

The speaker Joseph Michael Perera was the chief guest and distributed the awards along with the Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports Johnston Fernando.

Women's 10,000 metres: (1) D. A. Inoka (Central) 37.14.33, (2) M. A. Chandrawathi (North Central) 37.24.68, (3) Kanchanamala Udugedera (Central) 37.39.29.

Men's 5000 metres: (1) K. Chandradas (Central), 15.09.44, (2) Vijitha Bandara (Sabaragamuwa) 15.11.30, (3) R. M. Pushpakumara (Uva) 15.17.54 

Men's pole vault: (1) Pradeep Perera (Western) 4.40 sec, (2) A. C. Fernando (Western) 4.00 sec, A. P. Somaratne (Western) 3.90 sec.

Men's discus Throw: (1) Upendra Jayawardena (North Western Province) 40.78 metres, (2) Dulip Mendis (Southern Province) 38.63 metres, (3) Amila Perera (Western) 37.74 metres. 

Women's shot putt: (1) Nandani Wijesundera (Sabaragamuwa) 11.79 metres, (2) D. Muthunayake (North Western Province) 11.60 metres, (3) P. Kusumlatha (Western) 10.43 metres.

Women's triple jump: (1) R. Pramila (Southern) 11.79 metres, (2) D. Priyadarshani (Western) 11.78 metres, (3) L. Maduwanthi (Sabaragamuwa) 11.66 metres. 

Women's 400 metres hurdles: (1) N. Kalupahana (Sabaragamuwa) 1.05.22 sec, (2) V. Welpahala (Western) 1.06.84 sec, (3) S. Prematilleke (Sabaragamuwa) 1.07.23 sec.

Men's 400 metres hurdles: (1) S. Ranasinghe (Central), 55.28 sec, (2) N. Buddhika (Western) 55.53 sec, (3) Y. Ajith (North Western Province) 56.17 sec.

Women's 100 metres hurdles: (1) Sriyani Kulawansa (North Western Province) 14.23 sec, (2) L. Maduwanthi (Sabaragamuwa) 15.58 sec, (3) N. Kalupahana (Sabaragamuwa) 15.79 sec. 

Men's 110 metres hurdles: (1) N. Tharanga (Southern) 15.14 sec, (2) P. Garunayake (North Western) 15.50 sec, (3) S. Weerasinghe (Sabaragamuwa) 15.57.

Men's triple jump: (1) S. Weerasinghe (North Western) 15.67 metres, (2) G. Sameera (North Central) 15.66 metres, (3) K. Appuhamy (Western) 15.30 metres.

Women's 400 metres: (1) M. Priyadarshani (Southern) 57.28 sec, (2) M. de Soysa (Central) 58.41 sec, (3) S. Perera (North Western) 58.68 sec. 

Men's high jump: (1) R. Raju (North Western) 1.98 metres, (2) N. Priyadarshana (North Western) 1.94 metres, (3) C. de Soysa (Central) 1.90 metres. 

Men's 400 metres: (1) S. Silva (Western) 50.11 sec, (2) K. Chandrasiri (Sabaragamuwa) 50.27 sec, (3) S. Walgampaya (Central) 50.49 sec. 

Women's javelin throw: (1) N. Lakmali (Southern) 44.87 metres, (2) K. Gunawardena (Sabaragamuwa) 40.53 metres, (3) D. Lekamge (Sabaragamuwa) 39.33 metres.

Women's 100 metres: (1) Jani Silva (North Western) 12.14 sec, (2) S. Laksiri (Southern) 12.41 sec, (3) D. Jayakody (Western) 12.42 sec. 

Men's 100 metres: (1) R. Surendra (Western) 10.84 sec, (2) B. Seneviratne (North Central) 11.05 sec, (3) M. Safran (Southern) 11.24 sec. 

Women's 1500 metres: (1) N. de Silva (North Central) 4.39.40 sec, (2) S. Atapattu (North Western) 4.41.44 sec, (3) N. Rajasekera (Central) 4.43.22 sec. 

Men's 1500 metres: (1) C. Wijesinghe (North Western) 4.00.16 sec, (2) G. Jayasooriya (Sabaragamuwa) 4.02.06 sec, (3) M. Chaminda (North Western) 4.03.25 sec. 

Womn's 400X4 metres relay: (1) Southern 3.57.32 sec, (2) Central 4.01.21 sec, (3) Sabaragamuwa 4.07. 64 sec.
